STORYLINE:
US Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld warned American soldiers in Iraq to expect an increase in suicide bombings and attacks by insurgents ahead of the adoption of an Iraqi constitution in October.
Rumsfeld made his comments to US troops based in Balal, Iraq during a surprise visit to the country.
Rumsfeld told the gathered soldiers that they have a hard road ahead, but will remain in Iraq to complete their mission to help stabilise and train Iraqi security forces.
The American Defence Chief also got a firsthand look at the training of Iraqi security forces by watching a demonstration by a group of Iraqi special forces soldiers using live ammunition at a training range run by American troops.
Earlier at a joint news conference with Rumsfeld, Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari said the time had arrived to plan a coordinated transition from American to Iraqi military control throughout the country.
General George Casey, the top American commander in Iraq, said that he believed a US troop withdrawal could begin by spring 2006 if progress continues on the political front and if the insurgency does not expand.
