Aaron Ryan propagates a rosette succulent by peeling away its leaves as though it were an artichoke, then lining them atop a nursery flat filled with dry potting soil. (Which is different from a "mud flat," a nurseryman's term for one with moist soil.) Aaron is general manager of Succulent Gardens Nursery, Castroville, CA.
