What happened to the Minoan civilization? The Minoans, based on the island of Crete, were one of the earliest advanced civilizations in Europe, flourishing around 2000 to 1500 BC. They built impressive palaces, like the famous Knossos, and were skilled traders, connecting with Egypt and the Near East. But around 1450 BC, something changed. Many Minoan sites were destroyed, possibly due to a massive volcanic eruption on the nearby island of Thera. This eruption likely caused tsunamis and significant climate changes, impacting their agriculture and economy. There is also evidence of Mycenaean invasion from mainland Greece. By 1100 BC, the Minoans had vanished, leaving behind mysteries still unsolved today.
