Only three motorcycle manufacturers in the world can claim to have been in continuous production for more than 100 years, and Moto Guzzi is one of them. With the Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello, the manufacturer alludes twice to that long history in the name alone. the Moto Guzzi lineage is unmistakable.
It’s an entirely re-designed 1042cc V-twin from Moto Guzzi, with 4-valves per cylinder, The new transverse V-twin motor produces a claimed 115 hp at 8700 rpm and 77 lb-ft of torque at 6750 rpm. the inclusion of liquid cooling gets most of the attention, the engine’s changes go way beyond the new circulatory system.
The engine is remarkably smooth for the most part and it’s mated to a new six-axis Marelli 11MP IMU, with four modes of Turismo, Pioggia, Strada, and Sport.
In a world-first for motorcycles, the V100 Mandello features active-aero winglets on the tank that will deploy depending on speed and rider mode. Said to deflect up to 22% of wind from the rider.
Moto Guzzi hasn’t gone soft on the brakes and fitted Brembo M4.32 radial four-piston calipers, but Moto Guzzi has fitted a Brembo radial 18 mm master-cylinder on which to modulate the power. The result is a lovely, smooth feeling at the lever.
In the case of the V100, the engine has largely dictated how the bike’s chassis was destined to perform. Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 semi-active suspension front and rear. This system will have rebound and compression damping managed by the system and manually adjustable rear spring preload, with no provisions for preload adjustability up front.
The rider interface is handled by an Aprilia sourced full-color 5-inch TFT display, and control pods on the left and right handgrips allow the rider to scroll through the menus and modes. The display allows riders to set custom parameters for traction control, engine-braking, and ABS, while also setting the speed at which the aero wings deploy.
The Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello should be in dealerships by the end of the year, and I hope to have one for a proper test about that time. The base model Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello comes in two colors (Bianco Polare and Rosso Magma) for an MSRP of $15,490.
