Blood cancer is the most common type of cancer in children especially the acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Below are the Warnings [symptoms] for Blood Cancer in Children
- Abnormal paleness of the skin
- Increase in tiredness (since hemoglobin levels are low)
- Presence of bluish/greenish discoloration on hands and feet
- Red spots in the body
- Severe and persistent back and leg ache (w/o any fall)
- Lymph nodes enlargement: Masses of tissue in the neck, collar bone, groin region, armpits
The signs & symptoms of blood cancer are related to the three cell lines that are affected by blood cancer - the red blood cells that carry oxygen, the white blood cells that provide immunity, and the platelets that control bleeding.
When leukemia starts in the bone marrow it suppresses the production of all the three cell lines because of which the red blood cells are not produced adequately, which results in a low level of hemoglobin due to which the child appears pale and feels tired and fatigued.
The child is more prone to infections since the white blood cells are also affected - the child may get flu and other serious infections that may not subside easily.
Lastly with the platelets being affected, since they control bleeding - that is when the bruises are caused.
It is important for parents to know that these symptoms could also be due to other health conditions or simple infections and not necessarily cancer. However, if the symptoms are persistent and not reducing even after an evaluation with a doctor - that is when blood cancer can be considered as a cause and further diagnosis would be required.
