Cationic polymers such as polyethylenimine and DEAE-dextran are used to form complexes with nucleic acid and transfect cells via endocytosis. Some polymers have been developed to form micelles; Altogen Biosystems developed a proprietary biodegradable polymer-based transfection reagent for in vivo use that results in efficient and minimally toxic delivery of DNA/RNA material to the lung, liver, kidney and spleen via a single i.v. injection that results in sustainable knockdown or overexpressions.
