Since it’s Thursday, you know we have to talk about the current state of the US economy and unemployment rates across America in this week’s jobs report from our pals over at the Department of Labor.
This week’s jobs report displayed amazing news for the economy, as the actual unemployment figures were way lower than last week, and far exceeded the estimates of the economists from the DOW Jones.
The weekly report showed that 576,000 Americans filed their first-time unemployment claims, which is significantly lower than the previous week’s 769,000 revised initial claims and are also above the 700,000 first time claims predicted by economists.
These figures represent the best week of decreasing initial unemployment claims in 13 months, since March 2020.
Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst at Bankrate explained: “With a huge, better-than-expected decline in new claims for unemployment assistance, at long last the economic recovery appears to be picking up speed.”
Meanwhile, we talked yesterday about the new stimulus unemployment legislation proposed in the Senate, and now we have more details on the proposal that would help unemployment claimants in every state across America.
The Unemployment Insurance Modernization Act aims to reform unemployment systems for jobless Americans, raising and extending unemployment benefits to a larger pool of eligible workers.
This important new piece of legislation would make self-employed, gig workers, and freelancers permanently eligible for federally paid benefits, to the tune of $250 a week for six months.
Andrew Stettner, a senior fellow at the Century Foundation, explained: "This legislation would narrow the differences between states and create a more stable floor for this benefit."
Finally, governor Mike DeWine, from the great state of Ohio, recently proposed a plan to repay $1.5 billion in federal unemployment loan to help local small businesses across the Buckeye State.
DeWine explained: “This loan was caused by the global pandemic, and paying it off now will free Ohio employers from this burden so they can instead focus on getting employees across our state back to work.”
He continued: “This will help small business owners and employees, and I look forward to working with our partners in the General Assembly on legislation to pay off the loan.”
DeWine also said: “We need Ohio companies. Instead, they can use this savings to hire people and to provide wages and benefits to their employees."
Lt. Governor Jon Husted stated: “loan repayment would save Ohio businesses $1.9 million in federal unemployment tax in 2022, more than $200 million in 2023 and more than $300 million in 2024.
If you still haven’t applied for unemployment assistance, apply today and earn a cold one on Thirsty Thursday.
Simply check out your state’s PUA or UI website, show them your employment history and identifying documents, and let them know that you’ve been out of work due to that thing out there, if that’s the case.
For honestly and truthfully answering all their questions, you could receive a backdated unemployment check for over $20,000.
To all of the gig-workers, self employed, independent contractors, 1099 workers, even side hustlers, volunteers and freelancers, the PUA will help you get these amazing government disaster relief funds that you deserve.
