On Oct. 22, 1978, thousands of pilgrims packed into St. Peter's Square to glimpse the new pope, Saint John Paul II. He was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years and celebrated his inaugural Mass on this day in 1978. Now we celebrate his feast. St. JP2, pray for us!
