What are interceptors?
Interceptors are mounted to the transom and deploy a vertical blade into the water flow that is coming through under the boat’s hull when underway. The vertical blades intercept the water flow and create a high pressure area under the hull immediately forward of the blades which equates to lift. Interceptors have a non-linear lift to blade deployment curve so with even a small amount of blade deployment into the water flow a lot of lift is generated quickly.
The Zipwake interceptors operate independently to create lift under either side of the hull as required to stabilise the boat when underway. Automatic deployment of the interceptor blades in unison when accelerating from low speed reduces time to get on the plane and also bow lift. They also work when decelerating to create stern lift so the boat comes off the plane flatter which allows for forward visibility to be maintained.
When comparing interceptors to trim tabs, interceptors are a more efficient way to create lift and they are also at least 5 times faster than trim tabs, in some cases 10 or more times faster.
What are Trim Tabs?
Trim Tabs are flat plates extending out from the transom and hinged from the transom. Trim tab angle adjustment is controlled with either electric or hydraulic actuators. Most trim tab systems are manually controlled with switches but some are automatic.
