Sevdalinka, an ancient form of love song from Bosnia and Herzegovina, has been recognized by UNESCO as part of the world’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Sevdalinka, also known as the Balkan Blues, dates back to the 16th century and is a blend of South Slavic oral poetry and the music of the Ottoman Empire.
Often performed a cappella (without any instrumental accompaniment) or accompanied by traditional instruments like a lute, the main function of sevdalinka is to tell a story.
It is practised by professional and amateur performers of all genders and backgrounds and is a key part of stage folklore.
Intangible Cultural Heritage
It includes song, music, drama, skills, crafts, and the other parts of culture that can be recorded but cannot be touched.
As of July 2024, a total of 730 elements from 145 countries across 5 regions have been listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage, with 15 elements from India, including the Kumbh Mela, included in this prestigious list.
