So my SXJB75 coupled with Zoom B1 Four X and close to Orange RB35 can emphasise the microphonic nature of the stock ceramic pickups.
Fortunately I had some of Tony's Jazz Bass pickups - these are Alnico and slightly lower output than stock (7/7.25 v 8/8.5 k ohm).
I learnt today that Jazz bass neck and bridge pickups are not interchangeable - and this explains why I had more trouble fitting to the Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Short Scale bass.
Anyhow I take you real time thru the key stages of process - I edited out some soldering and restringing but other than that reasonably quick - perhaps 1h15 including 20 mins stringing.
These new pickups are definitely NOT microphonic
The tone out of them is really warm. A marked improvement on stock pickups - although the stock are good.
I think a complete set of replacement pickups including a hum canceller (not fitted) is less than £70 in 2020.
The three things missing on this bass are
1. Some sort of Audere active control panel.
Alas they don't ship to UK at the moment
2. Rotosounds Billy Sheenan strings - I will stick with the stock ones whilst I am noodling at home
3. a clean
a beautiful bass just got better.
Thanks Tony of Ironstone - I am pretty sure I am coming back for a Gilmour scratchplate for my SX Stratocaster- got tonwait for my birthday.
