Police has registered a case on 27th of August, 2021 against two owners and a couple of helping staff of a plastic molding factory in Mehran Town here which was gutted a day earlier and due to absence of emergency exits 17 laborers burned to death.
Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh on Law & Environment, Spokesperson Sindh Govt. has taken to the Twitter to state: “FIR has been registered regarding the unfortunate fire incident of yesterday at Mehran Town. Proper investigation has been initiated in this case & justice will be ensured. Insha’Allah”
It may be recalled that the fire that engulfed the first floor of GM Chemicals, located (on Plot No. 40, Sector 6-F of) Korangi’s Mehran Town area here on Friday 27th of August, claimed lives of seventeen, most of them underage, laborers. According to sources there were no fire-fighting gadgets, fire-alarms or emergency exits, like almost all the manufacturing units operating in Pakistan, hence 30-35 people working in the factory got trapped inside, tragically half of them burnt to death alive (five of the deceased have been identified as Salman, Farhan, Ali, Hassan and Farman). Seventeen bodies have been taken out of the still smoldering batiment. Three of the rescue workers too got injured.
Meanwhile, taking notice of the tragedy, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had directed the Commissioner of the Metropolis and the Labor Dept to furnish a report deciphering how the incident happened and what were the safety measures the factory owners had taken to prevent such tragedy. He had also directed the concerned authorities to make sure that the injured were provided best possible medical treatment. DG KDA, saying that the factory was illegally operating in a residential area that belonged to Oversees Society, had ordered an inquiry. The Governor of Sindh Imran Ismail, expressing his grief over the tragedy, directed provision of best medical treatment to the injured.
