While the Anza Borrego desert is full of supernatural legends, it is also full of legendary history from prospectors, explorers, and in the case of Marshal South, writers. In 1931, Marshal South decided to embark on an experiment - living on Ghost Mountain with his wife and kids. This experiment ended up lasting sixteen years, and with the South family constructing a home - Yaquitepec (the House of the Sun). While the South family is long gone, the ruins of the structure remain, along the Marshal South Trail - the route they took to haul supplies. This easy two mile roundtrip hike is a great introductory experience to the oddities of the desert. For those that want to explore more, there are two nearby short trails - the Morteros Trail - and the Pictograph Trail (also in Blair Valley) that lead to ancient cultural sites of the Kumeyaay People. Whether one wants to spend a day, or longer, this is a great zone to experience the scenery - and history of the park.
