I purchased a used woodturning Lathe before Christmas and began my journey to make bowls, goblets, spin tops, and whatever else I could learn to make on the lathe. After getting a set of chisels and some other lathe accessories (chuck, calipers, face shield, grinder for sharpening, etc), I tried my hand at making a few items (a mini bat, goblets, spin tops, and a few simple bowls) with some scrap wood from my neighbor. I quickly learned that the type of wood makes a big difference and getting good local woodturning wood (for free) was a challenge. So I contacted a few local arborists and watched for people getting rid of firewood on Kijiji to get some freshly cut down trees. I bought a small electric 16" chainsaw from kijiji and started cutting what I had sourced into bowl blanks. Then the challenge of working with green (wet) wood presented itself. So I did some research and figured out how to build a homemade kiln to dry the wood after rough turning it. Now I'm getting ready to turn a whole bunch of rough bowls and will dry them in the kiln and then finish them on the lathe. I hope to make some videos of that process.
