(5 Jun 1984) GS CAS INDIA: The Punjab has been entirely immobilised by the
06068401 government with a 2 month ban on reporting of anything
1"VT+BVU relating to the crisis in the Punjab. The Hindu state
of Haryana has sealed its border to prevent Sikh gunmen
taking refuge from the army. The siege on the Golden
Temple in Amritsar was condemned by the Sikh extremists
leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, speaking of his men
fighting to the last. The head of the Sikh Akali Dal
Party, Harchand Singh Longowal gave himself up to the
Indian army along with 2 other important moderate leaders
of the Skih movement. According to the Indian news agency
the army sweep has resulted in more than 700 suspected
terrorists being arrested.
