Compound lead screw would bind. This is a my take on how to solve the problem. I used a skateboard wheel bearing which ended up sliding perfectly over the lead screw shaft- i believe 8mm ID. Tapered roller bearings may be a better option, but that is what I had on hand.

If done again, I would have bored the bearing pocket first, then the mount holes, because I didn't get the alignment right and had to drill 2 more using the other half. I may fill in those other holes later.
