A ghost town in Cyprus that was abandoned by its inhabitants 40 years ago but does not want to give up yet! We are located in the beautiful picturesque village of old Theletra in Paphos.
Walking in the narrow paved streets you feel like you are in another era. Closing my eyes, I imagine the women going to the foundain for water, kneading and doing their daily jobs...
It was abandoned in 1980 due to the previous earthquakes and landslides, and because there was no prospect of growth and expansion.
The village settled in the area of the old Theletra during the Turkish occupation. As the inhabitants told us, they used to be in a more central point but they decided to move to this inaccessible area to avoid the Turkish raids.
It is built on a steep slope with the wonderful traditional folk architecture using stone of the area.
They are built very close to each other, with small courtyards due to the limited space that existed.
In the old Theletra until 1980 when it was transferred they had neither water nor electricity in the houses because it was an inaccessible area and it was difficult for the state to provide them.
They took water from the main fountain of the village and used oil lamps for light. For cooking, of course, they used wood stoves and wood ovens.
At the request of the mayor to the then president of the republic, Archbishop Makarios, the government decided to move the village and financed 70% of the construction of the houses.
This decision divided the community because they disagreed about the new location they would be transferred and did not proceed immediately with its relocation. So the issue remained stagnant for many years to come.
Eventually the inhabitants settled in the new community at the top of the hill near the main road in new houses.
Important sights are the hideout of EOKA heroes, and the church of Panagia Chryseleousa which was built in 1755.
In addition to the central church, there were two chapels in the village, that of St. Elias and that of St. Anastasia.
At the top of the slope near the church the helicopter landed in 1963, transporting the president of the republic, Archbishop Makarios, to see the problems of the community and help find a solution.
