The Pharaohs of this world—they don’t like to hear this: Allahu Akbar. They prefer to be the Akbar, the uppermost. But evil empires always come to an end. Wa’antumul-a’lawna in kuntum mu’minin: You are the uppermost if you have Iman (Quran 3:139). This is true even amid the misfortunes, dramas, tragedies, massacres, and genocides that plague our world today. As Muslims with a deep concern for our fellow believers, we are distressed by the apparent victory of Firaun, Haman, Nimrod, and Abu Jahal. Our hearts are pierced by the injustice, the arrogance of the wealthy and powerful, and the plight of those who only wish to worship Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala—clutching their helpless children as bombs rain down around them, while the other Firauns of the world watch on, hoping this unsettling scene will soon be over. There is not just one Firaun now, but many. Yet, as they do today—in places like Gaza, among others—the people still hold fast to this truth: Allahu Akbar. This is what they proclaim during Eid. They know that Allah is above, beyond, and the source of everything. Everything that exists will ultimately lead to the fulfillment of His plan, and to the downfall and humiliation of the unjust, the occupier, and the oppressor. These oppressors will one day be swept away by a great wind from an unexpected direction. Because this is what always happens—pride comes before a fall. We are confident that once again, people will find themselves in their homes, enjoying justice and prosperity, while the oppressors are driven into the dust.
