Welcome to my Valletta vlog! My day in Valletta Malta was a memorable one - there is so much to see and do that I arrived early on a ferry from Sliema and headed straight in. The fortified limestone city glows in the bright sun and it’s a beautiful sight to behold, especially from the water down below! My intention was to walk around and find my own way, perhaps even get lost in the maze of tiny alleyways and narrow streets that seem to present an instagram-worthy photograph opportunity wherever you go.
Valletta was built by the Order of Saint John in the 16th century and named after the Grandmaster Jean de Parisot Valette and is today the European Union’s smallest capital city by area.
Valletta is situated on a small peninsula on Malta’s northern coastline and is less than one square kilometre in size. It’s a popular place for a day trip and is definitely worth visiting if you’re on the island. As soon as I walked through the city gate built into the fortified city walls I knew I was in for a good day - the limestone buildings and magnificent architecture showed me exactly why Valletta is known as the Golden City.
My self guided tour of Valletta took me along Republic Street passing street performers, outdoor eateries and busy shops on my way. It’s wonderful to just look up and see the Maltese balconies and decorated windows looking straight back down onto the street - no doubt it’s a beautiful area. I continued walking until I found the Grand Harbour and decided to fly my drone to get a spectacular aerial view over the city - I wasn’t disappointed!
As the temperature increased I headed down to Fort St Elmo and then a local swimming spot close to a breakwater and lighthouse. One day in Valletta is not enough if you ask me, there’s so many cool things to do that two days has to be the minimum. After an exceptional road trip around the Maltese Island I was sad to have to return the rental car but excited to see more of Valletta and the spectacular places close by.
