The Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo is a fascinating and beautiful UNESCO World Heritage site in Bulgaria. These were originally hermit retreats occupied by monks, that over time were dug out further and eventually became churches. Following a grant from the Bulgarian king, they were decorated in the 15th century. Although there's quite a few of the churches in the area, this is the only one available for public access. But we didn't mind, because it's absolutely beautiful!
