Instead of moving through space, a warp drive compresses the space in front of the ship and stretches it behind. The ship remains stationary within a so-called warp bubble while space moves around it. This principle is rooted in Einstein’s general theory of relativity. But can it be realized?
In 1994, Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre proposed a solution to Einstein’s equations that allows for the creation of a warp bubble.
