LEAD is the first edtech startup to be minted into a unicorn in 2022, and the sixth overall after Byju’s, Unacademy, Eruditus, upGrad and Vedantu.
Its also very rare that we feature female founders of unicorns on #StartUpCentral. Well, that’s because we don’t have many of them in India, and that makes this interview with the LEAD co-founder Smita Deorah quite special. Here’s to more unicorns and women power!
Smita Deorah tells ET Now’s Nayantara Rai that LEAD’s biggest differentiator is its product and services not being an “add on” or “supplementary education” like other edtech unicorns. Instead, it’s in the core affordable schooling business for K-12, and entering the new academic year with 5000 schools across 500 cities. “By affordable education we mean schools that have annual fees if Rs 15,000-25,000 per annum. So we are not working only with the niche schools that have annual fees of more than Rs 1lakh a year,” she says.
