To ensure good adhesion over a bare plastic substrate requires that it be cleaned properly and coated with adhesion promoter before application of an undercoat. This standard operating procedure (SOP) covers using PPG’s National Rule VOC system for preparing unprimed plastic.

1. Ensuring Good Adhesion
To ensure good adhesion over a bare plastic substrate requires that it be cleaned properly and coated with adhesion promoter before application of an undercoat.

2. PPG's National Rule VOC System
PPG’s National Rule VOC system for preparing unprimed plastic is comprised of three essential OneChoice® products: SU4901 Clean and Scuff Sponge, SU4902 Plastic Adhesion Wipe, SU4903 Advanced Plastic Bond — also available as an aerosol, product code SUA4903 — and SXA103 Multiprep Cleaner.

3. Clean and Scuff
To begin, remove the pre-saturated sponge from the SU4901 Clean and Scuff package, which is sufficient for cleaning a full-size bumper. Saturate the bumper cover thoroughly with the sponge. Then use the other side to scuff the cover thoroughly using moderate pressure to avoid grooving the plastic.

4. Rinse
Rinse thoroughly with water. If the water beads up instead of running off in a sheet, you’ll need to clean and scuff further.

5. Dry and Wipe
Blow dry and wipe with a clean cloth.

6. Perform Surface Check
Check to ensure that the entire surface is totally de-glossed and you’re ready to move in the paint booth for final cleaning with a multi-prep cleaner.

7. Clean Cover
Clean the cover with SXA103 Multi-Prep cleaner.

8. Plastic Adhesion Wipe and Flash
Remove the SU4902 plastic adhesion wipe from the package and apply a light, even coat over the entire surface. Be sure to wipe only in one direction to minimize product overlap. Allow 3-5 minutes of flash time.

9. Apply Advanced Plastic Bond
Apply a light coat of the SU4903 Advanced Plastic Bond. Use a spray gun for an entire bumper cover. Allow 5 minutes to flash, or wait until the surface has dried to a matte finish.

10. Final Surface Check and Primer Sealer if Needed
Check the surface for any scratches, chips or other imperfections. If any imperfections are found, you’ll need to apply a primer surfacer. If not, apply a coat of primer sealer mixed in the correct G-shade recommended for the basecoat color you'll be spraying.
