Niort, a town of around 60,000 in western France known mainly as a hub for finance and insurance companies, has become an unlikely centre for cocaine trafficking, with mules smuggling drugs from French Guiana on the northern coast of South America and arriving in the town, which has a large Guianese community, via Paris.
