The House of Lippe: The family's ancestors fought alongside Henry the Lion and negotiated with Napoleon. A whole region in the far northeastern part of North Rhine-Westphalia is named after them, and the heraldic symbol of this noble dynasty – the Lippe Rose – adorns the state flag of NRW today. The family has a proud and eventful history.
In the episode, Hereditary Prince Stephan Lippe guides Julia Melchior through the magnificent Detmold Residence Castle, which is still in family ownership. Together, they dive into the over 800-year history of the once noble lords, counts, princes, and federal princes of Lippe. In addition to the tour of the Residence Castle, Prince Stephan takes Julia Melchior on an archaeological discovery tour in the Teutoburg Forest. The Falkenburg, the former ancestral seat of the family from the 12th century, has been excavated and partially reconstructed in recent years with the help of state funding. Sensational archaeological finds have emerged from the excavations.
To this day, Prince Stephan's parents, the head of the House of Lippe, Prince Armin, and his wife, Princess Traute, live in the family castle in the heart of Detmold. In conversation, Prince Armin, whose father was the ruling Prince of Lippe until the end of the monarchy in 1918, shares stories from the tumultuous history of the dynasty.
