Making your own sunscreen from all natural ingredients is a great idea for many reasons!
I first began making my own because it was packaged in small plastic bottles. For an outdoor adventuring mermaid, like myself, I went through a few tubes a summer. This felt incredibly wasteful. Once I learned that the main ingredients in these chemical sunscreens--like Oxybenzone--cause long-term health problems it was an easy choice to switch to DIY sunscreen. Soon after, I learned that the oils have a similarly negative impact on the marine eco-system, specifically coral reefs. So much so, that Hawaii has passed a bill banning sales and distribution of sunscreens with these harmful chemicals that will go into effect in 2021.
INGREDIENTS:
3/4 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup beeswax
1/4 cup cacao butter
1/4 cup almond oil (or olive oil or hemp oil)
1 tbsp carrot seed oil
1.5 tbsp grapeseed or jojoba oil
1/2 cup non-nano particle zinc oxide
1 tsp-1 tbsp cacao powder
METHOD:
1. Melt the oils, wax, and butter in a double boiler (a heat safe bowl inside a shallow pot of water, medium heat, so the water is hot and this is what heats the bowl to melt the wax and oil).
2. Once it begins to melt, whisk together until combined
3. Add the zinc oxide (cover your mouth and nose with your shirt, and go slowly, it can sometimes puff out into the air and you don't want to breathe this in)
4. Whisk together, adding cacao until the desired tint
5. Pour into a shallow, wide-mouthed jar or tin
Apply every hour or two or if you see that the sunscreen is no longer on the surface of your skin.
