In October this year, my brother and his family joined me in one of Zimbabwe's best-kept secrets - Gonarezhou National Park. I have actually visited this pristine area twice before - once in 2011 with my dad and once in 2013 with my wife, Tabby, and ever since then, it has been one of our favourite national parks in all of Africa.

Unlike most of the other national parks in Zimbabwe, and Southern Africa for that matter, Gonarezhou is still extremely wild. And by wild I don't necessarily mean full of animals, I mean isolated and unspoilt. You could easily drive the whole day in Gonarezhou and not see a single other vehicle!

Despite the low tourist numbers, Gonarezhou is extremely well-run thanks to the Gonarezhou Conservation Trust, a partnership between Zimbabwe Parks and The Frankfurt Zoological Society. They do amazing anti-poacing work, keep the roads graded, control the erosion, protect the baobab trees from elephants and keep the campsites in a pristine condition.

On this overlanding trip, we stay at Tondo transit campsite for two nights, Hlaro wilderness campsite for three nights and then end of at Bengi Weir - a unique little double-story platform overlooking a dry riverbed. We had some incredible lion and elephant sightings and just loved exploring the wilderness that is Gonarezhou.
