Gustav Klimt is one of the most renowned artists of the late 19th and 20th centuries. Klimt created his own very personal style that is remembered for the ethereal female nude, distorted figures, and dream-like essence murals. He was one of the leading members of the Viennese Art Nouveau movement, known as Secession.
Klimt as well as the other members were influenced by the English Arts and Crafts Movement, the Japanese woodblock prints and most prominently Sigmund Freud's ideas of suppressed sexuality.
Klimt, the son of a gold engraver, filled his artworks with gold color, creating an opulent ambience that amplified his symbolic connotations like in Byzantine ecclesiastical Art. This influence can be seen in his so-called "Golden Phase", including his world-famous "The Kiss".
Today his artworks can be found in Belvedere Museum and Palace in Vienna as well as prestigious Institutes worldwide such as the Neue Galerie, the MoMA in New York, and the Leopold Museum.
