Just say no to mulch volcanoes 🌋 That terrible practice causes a lot of damage to trees. Here are the top tips from Ag extension about mulching:

Mulch out, not up! No deeper than the heel of your hand, generally 2-4 inches.
Back off from the trunk! Keep all mulch away from the trunk of the tree, allowing the root flare to show just above ground level.
