Augustine was one of God's servants in early church history. He was a restless soul in his youth, indulging in all kinds of sinful acts that appealed to his flesh. This indulgence came to a head one day as he felt a deep conviction and restlessness in his heart. He experienced what many of us do: the world's pleasures do not fill the emptiness in the soul.
He was driven to pick up the Scriptures in which he read God's truth to us: each of us is a sinner in need of the Savior. Repenting of his sins and committing his life to Christ, Augustine found a new passion in his heart, one that drove him to study the Scriptures in depth and experience God's power through his fervent prayers.
Though a servant from so long ago, Augustine reminds us that no matter what era you are from, the human heart's need to fill it God's love, grace, and forgiveness is universal. To all of the restless souls, Jesus has given this invitation, "Come, and I will give you rest."
