One of the reasons why we should dewrom is we live in an area that's highly endemic to intestinal worms.
Do you know that? Adult worms live in the intestine where they produce thousands of eggs each day. In areas that lack adequate sanitation, these eggs contaminate the soil.
Proper hygiene can also help in reducing transmission and reinfection like washing your hands effectively with eoap and water
Deworming is not the only solution, however.
“Improving basic hygiene, sanitation, health education and providing access to safe drinking-water are also keys to resolving the health and nutritional problems caused by intestinal worms,”
Deworming: It's Not Just for Kids!
As a pharmacist, I see a lot of patients who are unaware of the importance of deworming for adults. But did you know that deworming is just as important for adults as it is for children?
Worms can live in the intestines of both adults and children, and they can cause a variety of health problems, including:
* Anemia
* Malnutrition
* Growth deficiencies
* Diarrhea
* Abdominal pain
* Nausea
* Vomiting
* Weight loss.
In severe cases, worm infestation can even lead to death.
That's why it's important to get dewormed regularly, even if you don't have any symptoms.
Deworm at least once or twice a year.
The most commonly recommended medication for adult is a single dose of albendazole (400mg) and mebendazole for pregnant women.
There are several ways that worms can get into the human body:
* Eating contaminated food or water. Worm eggs can be found in soil, so if you eat fruits or vegetables that have not been properly washed, or drink water from an untreated source, you could be at risk of ingesting worm eggs.
* Touching contaminated surfaces. Worm eggs can also be found on surfaces, such as doorknobs, countertops, and toilet seats. If you touch a contaminated surface and then put your fingers in your mouth, you could ingest the worm eggs.
* Walking barefoot in contaminated soil. Some types of worms can penetrate the skin, so if you walk barefoot in soil that is contaminated with worm eggs, you could become infected.
That's why it's important to take steps to prevent worm infestation, such as:
* Washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water after using the toilet, changing diapers, and before eating.
* Cooking food thoroughly, especially meat and fish.
* Washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating them.
* Avoiding swimming in contaminated water.
* Wear shoes when walking barefoot in public places.
If you think you or your child may have a worm infestation, it's important to see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
