To clarify, I am dressed in middle class attire for this video but to get a closer look at the working class clothing you can check out the video two posts down.
Like everything related to history, there are a ton of variables so this is just an example to give you a general idea. Of course there were people poorer than chamber maids and not every chamber maid made $4.50, but this will hopefully give you an idea of what a normal girl was buying and wearing in the past.
Also consider that it’s likely she didn’t buy everything brand new, cast offs from her mistress were a common perk in domestic service and reworking or retrimming a dress to make it more fashionable was also an option.
