PKK Militants Attack Minibus
PKK militants have bombed a minibus in the eastern province of Igdir. Security sources say 12 police officers died in the terror attack. The PKK also launched two assaults in southeastern Turkey on Sunday and killed 16 soldiers. And Turkish warplanes conducted air strikes in northern Iraq on Monday night in retaliation. They reportedly hit 20 PKK targets and killed 40 militants. Turkey, the EU, US and UK all consider the PKK a terrorist organisation. The PKK’s umbrella organisation, the KCK, ended its three-year ceasefire with Turkey in July. Since then, PKK militants have increased their attacks across the country.
Refugee Crisis Grows
25 thousand refugees have been stranded on the island of Lesbos. The Greek government and UN’s refugee agency have sent extra staff and ships to the island to deal with the influx of people. The government has also set up an extra processing centre in Athens. The International Organization for Migration says 350 thousand asylum seekers have crossed the Mediterranean to enter Europe this year.
Opposition Leader’s Election Appeal
Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has asked the international community to help ensure that the upcoming elections bring ‘genuine political and governmental change’ to the country. 30 million people are eligible to vote in the November election for the country’s legislature. The combined houses of parliament will then choose a new president. A military junta has ruled Myanmar for decades.
4 Charged for Helping Drug Lord
Federal courts in Mexico have charged four public workers for helping drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman escape a maximum security prison in July. They’re accused of not activating the security mechanisms of the prison to alert other officials. Guzman is still at large. He had only been recaptured a year ago after he escaped prison in 2011.
