During the past two years, the Medal of Honor played a strong role in the discussions about the future names of Department of Defense assets across the country. Of the “shortlist” of 87 finalists, 54 of them received the Medal of Honor for their conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty.
As part of this process, historian Connor Williams approached the National Medal of Honor for assistance in completing his research on Dr. Mary Walker, who received the Medal of Honor for her actions, including those in Chattanooga, during the Civil War. In all, four recipients — Dr. Mary Walker, T/SGT Van Barfoot, PVT Henry Johnson and CW4 Michael Novosel, Sr. — were recommended as new namesakes for the bases.
