So WTF is Campari? It’s inventor Gaspare Campari took 20 years to arrive at its current recipe and to this day it is still closely guarded secret. We do know that it is made by infusing herbs and fruits in alcohol and water. And a lot of people think that its trademark bitter taste comes from the small orange like 'chinotto' grown in Italy that has that unmistakable bitter flavour. There’s also some woody flavours in there with a strong herbal finish.
It’s distinctive red colour is now artificial but used to come from Carmine dye, effectively ground up beetles. Although before you complain…it was basically in everything until about 10 years ago!
It can be served on the rocks, with soda, in an Americano or many hundreds of classic aperitivo drinks. Although it may take a few drinks to get used to the flavour, there’s no doubt that it is incredibly moreish and keeps you coming back time after time!
What’s your favourite drink with Campari?
