“Amara, I need you to listen to me,” her mother said, her voice quiet but firm. She sat on the edge of their small bed, her hands clasped tightly in her lap.
Amara, lying beside her, sighed and turned toward the wall. “Mama, we’ve had this conversation so many times. Obiora is a good man. He loves me, and I love him. Why do you keep trying to change my mind?”
Her mother placed a hand gently on her shoulder. “Because I see what you refuse to see. There’s something wrong with him. I don’t trust him, and I can’t explain it. The way animals avoid him, the strange coldness around him. Even the diviner warned us, Amara.”
Amara sat up, frustration flashing across her face. “The diviner said he saw shadows, but that could mean anything! Obiora is generous, kind, and respected. Everyone in the village loves him, but you—why can’t you?”
