Place-based innovation policies in the era of grand societal challenges

Persistent ecological and societal challenges such as the climate urgency, environmental degradation and growing socio-economic inequalities require a reorientation of place-based innovation policies towards sustainability goals. However, the question of what theoretical and empirical insights could inform such policy approaches remains poorly understood.

Drawing on recent work that advocates an alternative understanding of innovation and casts light on innovation-exnovation dynamics and the role of agency in green path development, the talk will examine opportunities and barriers to the construction of challenge-oriented innovation systems in different regional settings.
