It’s an unfortunate reality that those who have contributed the least to climate change will be among the most negatively impacted. The global poor, small-scale farmers, indigenous people, women, and children are already facing extreme drought, rising sea levels and more intense and frequent natural disasters, all of which cause displacement, hunger, and threats to their health. Women are especially vulnerable to these challenges as they are often primary caregivers and the providers of water, fuel and food in much of the Global South. Yet, women across the globe lack the resources and opportunities to respond to the threats of climate change and have a more difficult time recovering post-disaster. They are more often than not excluded in conversations surrounding adaptation, resilience and climate justice strategies, and yet, women often have the most effective solutions to the universal challenge of climate change. The concept of climate justice links man-made environmental changes to human rights, politics, and development and works to protect the rights of vulnerable populations, and has been championed by Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for the last 20 years.
Join Mary Robinson and Musimbi Kanyoro, CEO of the Global Fund for Women, for a discussion of the role of women in creating a more sustainable and just future in the face of climate change. These two champions of women’s rights and climate justice, join us during San Francisco’s Global Climate Action Summit for a conversation to address the unique challenges and opportunities that women face in combating the effects of global warming.
Mary Robinson will also be discussing her new book “Climate Justice: Hope, Resilience, and the Fight for a Sustainable Future” which tells stories from around the world about the fight against climate change and provides vital lessons for the path forward.
This event is presented in partnership with the Global Fund for Women and the Consulate General of Ireland San Francisco's office.
