Lumbrical plus finger explained
Lumbrical plus finger is the paradoxical extension of the finger when attempting to flex. It occurs due to proximal migration of the FDP tendon, often after tendon reconstruction with a graft that is too long, distal phalanx amputation, or non-repaired FDP injuries. 🖐️ The overstretched lumbrical muscle causes unwanted PIP extension when making a fist.
Understanding this mechanism is essential for:
🔹 tendon reconstruction
🔹 enhancing your biomechanical anatomy knowledge
🔹 diagnosing unexpected paradoxical movements
💡 Note that the lumbrical plus phenomenon doesn’t always follow a textbook presentation.
