This captivating episode explores how, at 76, Dave encountered severe health disturbances that began soon after he and his wife, Robbie switched to the Carnivore Diet.
Dave became sick with mysterious symptoms including an unusual and painful rash expelling hard crystalline material from his face and hand. The book, Toxic Superfoods, gave him the explanation he needed. His body was expelling oxalates. This was a surprising revelation given his disinterest in "superfoods" and his lifelong standard North American Diet featuring french fries, especially in his youth.
Daily potato intake is commonly overlooked as a major source of oxalate. Fries and other forms of potatoes are a basic staple, served with almost every meal. They don't have shocking oxalate values, like spinach and chard, but routine use of potatoes can exceed our bodies' capacity for the safe excretion of the oxalate they contain! That excess daily oxalate gets stuck in tissues (for years!) and gradually builds up with time.
Dave shares his transformative health journey, from long-standing struggles with overweight and significant gastrointestinal issues to his deeper understanding of oxalate accumulation and de-accumulation, a process that profoundly grabbed his attention.
The shift to a meat-focused diet brought Dave substantial relief from gut issues and a transformative reduction in weight and improved overall well-being. Dave's story serves as a testament to the importance of understanding the foods we eat and their potential risks.
Dave's narrative of personal trial and ultimate enlightenment has value for us all. Join us in uncovering the often-overlooked toxic impact of "normal foods." Witness transformation and resilience springing from informed dietary choices.
And please, skip the baked potatoes, chips, and fries! Be smart!
⚠️Disclaimer:
Clearing illness or "dumping" episodes may be more likely for persons who, like Dave, abruptly switch to a very low oxalate diet, such as a carnivore diet. If you choose to eat fewer foods with oxalates, please learn to do so gradually—as I recommend in Toxic Superfoods.
❓What are #oxalates? Why are they bad for you?
➡️Oxalic acid or #Oxalate is a toxin that causes oxidative stress and cell damage. It binds to minerals such as calcium and magnesium and forms crystals. Crystals lodged in cells, glands, eyes, bones and other tissues can cause tissue damage, chronic-recurring inflammation, pain, and other health problems.
❓So where do they come from?
➡️Plants make oxalic acid and oxalate crystals. High-oxalate foods include many popular foods that are widely recommended. Because of the general confusion about which foods are high in oxalate, please consult my website for valid information on the oxalate content of foods. Foods to watch out for include: Spinach, Chard, Tea, Chocolate (dark chocolate in particular), Nuts (especially almonds, cashews and peanuts), Sweet Potatoes, and White Potatoes.
❓How do we get rid of them?
➡️By avoiding or minimizing your intake of high-oxalate foods, your body can begin to clear them out. Make sure you slowly reduce your oxalate intake to avoid dramatic symptoms as your body clears oxalate deposits. Symptoms of rapid clearing include rashes, itching, diarrhea, joint pain, gout, interstitial cystitis, cardiac arrhythmia, blood sugar swings, cloudy urine, gritty eyes, and kidney stones.
⚠️Many plant foods are low in oxalate and can still be eaten on a low-oxalate diet if you wish to do so.
