The Blackhawk Amplifiers Heimdall-2 takes some inspiration from the Boss HM-2, but it does much more than the classic chainsaw sound associated with the HM-2. That being said… I love the Entombed & Dismember Swedish Death Metal chainsaw sound, so I’m staying in that neighborhood with this video. If you are looking into this pedal then you probably want to see how close it can get to an HM-2. To make a long story short, the Heimdall-2 operates almost more like an HM-2 flavored overdrive than an actual clone of an HM-2. It has its own sound, offering a twist on the classic chainsaw sound that I have not been able to replicate with other HM-2 style pedals.
To start things off, calling this an HM-2 style pedal is kind of selling it short. To quote the Blackhawk website: ”The three main EQ gyrators (low high mid and treble) are all directly from the HM2 but otherwise it’s a very different pedal.” You can get a solid chainsaw sound out of it, but it covers a lot of other ground. This differentiation is probably for the best. I’ve owned a number of HM-2 style pedals (as well as a few outright clones), and they always sound too high fidelity for me. I have an original MIJ Boss HM-2, and it has a certain scuzziness that is hard to copy. This pedal has the HM-2 style snarl without sounding exactly like an HM-2. If you play in a dense band mix then it’s helpful to be able to fine tune things without losing the overall chainsaw effect. The Frequency knob is essential to dialing things in, and that’s the knob I will focus on here. This pedal can do super dark fuzz type sounds all the way to a slight clean boost to shape eq, but it really shines as a snarling overdrive pedal with an HM-2 style voicing.
The Heimdall-2 works best into the front of a slightly dirty amp (in this case a Rectangular Micro T) or when stacked with other pedals. It sounded great into the front of my Orange Rockerverb MKiii, but I found the eq controls on the pedal seemed to do more when running into a lower gain amp like the Micro T. The Heimdall-2 isn’t extremely high gain on its own, which is helpful if you are stacking it as a second stage of dirt/chaos. Some HM-2 inspired pedals get a weird filtered/wah sound when they are stacked with distortion/drive pedals or a very dirty amp. I tried this pedal with my Micro T, my Rockerverb MKiii, and my Blackhawk Amplifiers Ragnarok. It worked just fine with all three of them.
I used a direct in recording setup for this video, running the Heimdall-2 into my Rectangular Micro T and then out into a Two Notes Captor 8 with an NOS V30 speaker sim.
