Abandoned beach in the Athenian Riviera.
In Athens Greece there are many organized beaches but also beaches with free access to the public. Voulas B' Beach was among the organized beaches in the Athenian Riviera with its clear waters and sandy beach being a pole of attraction for swimmers during the 70s and the 80s.
What made Voulas beach unique was the variety of activities it offered to the visitors. There were basketball and volleyball courts and tennis courts where children and parents played sports. This beach of Athens was one of the few that was organised with locker rooms where swimmers could take a shower and change clothes discreetly.
There was a small refreshment room and an outdoor bar, while opposite the beach there were restaurants. Greek movie stars of the time and other personalities chose Voula beach as a nearby destination for relaxation and fun.
Today, however, the situation of this Voulas Beach is disappointing. The place has been abandoned and does not look at all like the once attractive destination. For at least two decades, beach redevelopment plans froze, buildings were looted, sports facilities have rusted and the coast was dumped.
We can only hope that this beautiful beach which is only 18 km away from the center of Athens will soon change and become again an attraction of the Athens Riviera.
Enjoy the walk.
