With a 5.4 litre supercharged V8, Roush exhaust and 550 BHP being sent in full to the rear wheels, is this 2011 Shelby GT500 Convertible the ultimate affordable modern classic?
Well thats what I attempted to find out and I should say from the outset, my experience with American cars is little to none. This is only the second or third American car I have ever driven and the first that I have driven for an extended period.
I watched the Mustang GT500 car review - Top Gear - BBC about 13 years ago and it stuck in my head that these cars were monstrous things that couldn't corner. The age old cliche that Europeans would get left behind in a drag race and American's would get left behind round the bendy stuff rang through my head. But is this actually true? Perhaps not now, but 2011 is more than a decade ago now so lets see how the Shelby of yesteryear stacks up.
The version I was driving came with a Roush exhaust which was loud and brilliant. I also had the benefit of the SVT handling package and Brembo brakes so I was fairly confident that the version I was in wouldn't try and kill me. Kill, maybe not, but scare...a little. I wouldn't call it easy to drive but as I say in the review, on track, this car would be hugely rewarding and no doubt extremely satisfying.
The 1967 Shelby GT500, otherwise known as Eleanor was the first car that made me fall for Mustangs and the 2011 that I just review did much to bolster the brand in my eyes. Yes, it's old school engineering and yes, its probably too big for UK roads and yes, the MPG is joke...but when you start worrying about those things, you might as well throw away your licence, order your bus pass and accept that you are no longer a petrol head.
If I had to sum the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 up in a sentence it would go something like this; scary, silly, raw and an incomparable power and feel. What a machine. I hope I get to drive one on track eventually.
