On December 16, 1999, at the Teatro Alameda in Mexico City, Mexico, the Spanish language of El Fantasma de la Ópera premiered. The show ran from 1999 to 2001 and starred Juan Navarro as the Phantom, Irasema Terrazas as Christine, and José Joel as Raoul. Navarro’s majestic voice breathed life into the Phantom and the portrayal of such a vulnerable, complex character was outstanding and set the bar extremely high for the Phantoms that would follow.
