I tried Winter Sowing snow peas by seed this season. I wasn't sure if they'd do well but was surprised to find they did beautifully! (See below for info on the Winter Sowing method)
In this video I show you how I transplant my snow pea seedlings into my tray container garden and also how I trellis them up my fence.
WHY Winter Sow Snow Peas or Sugar Snap peas instead of direct sowing in early spring?? You can sow the seeds months earlier than you can direct sow with this method and I will have full grown, hardened seedlings before direct sowers are even tearing open the pack of seeds to sow. Bottom line is you get another full crop before direct sowers. I put these out in -20 degrees F in 2 feet of snow in late Feb. Mother Nature did the rest.
Snow peas are not to be confused with sugar snap peas. Snow peas are flatter, thinner and more delicate. Sugar snap peas have bigger peas and are thicker pods. You can eat the whole pods of both sugar snap peas and snow peas.
Both types of peas are great eaten raw, put in salads, steamed or added to stir frys.
