From monkeys and alligators … to porcupines and humans … Here are 13 of the strangest things found inside of snakes
#13 Scutes & Scales
Northern Queensland in Australia was the site of a battleground for a war between the reptiles. A snake and a crocodile waged a 5-hour scale-to-scute struggle in the waters of Lake Moondarra as onlookers beheld the deadly contest. Finally, the snake managed to coil about the croc to constrict its opponent. Afterward, the vanquished prey was dragged to the shore, where it was eaten face first. Onlookers said it took the serpent about 15 minutes to devour the other animal. Australia of course is home to many of the world’s deadliest snakes, as will be evident as we slither through this list.
#12 Super Size Me
Boa constrictors are known to prey on a variety of mammals. But this reptile paid a steep price for its lamb dinner -- its life. When the 18-foot (5.5 m) serpent in China devoured the mother sheep and its unborn lamb, it turned out to be a super sized meal the reptile couldn’t manage to put away. Experts say the animal was so heavy it couldn’t move away to digest its dinner, which caused it to regurgitate the dead ewe. Death by overeating is not uncommon for these rapacious reptiles. In fact, they seem to make a habit of eating themselves to death!
#11 Snake Eats Deer
Burmese pythons are among the world’s largest snakes, with specimens in the wild known to measure nearly 19 feet long (5.8 m). They’ve become a large problem in Florida, where they’re often found slithering about the Everglades, and are an invasive species. An example of the danger they can pose for indigenous species came in 2015 when one of the pythons managed to chow down a white tailed deer that weighed more than the reptile itself, which weighed about 32 pounds (14 kg) … but the fawn weighed 35 pounds (16 kg). Experts say that in terms of predator to prey ratio, this is likely the largest ever documented for any snake species.
#10 Macropod Munchies
And we’ll head back to Australia for this one. Here’s another type of story that seems to occur fairly often in North Queensland. A 10 foot (3 m) python managed to put on a horror show when it wandered into a backyard located there. The homeowner found the reptile and the mammal rolling around in his garden, and managed to take some gruesome pictures of the inter-species struggle. The wallaby was taken by surprise as the serpent wrapped its jaws about the critter’s body … and essentially swallowed it all in a single attempt. Just another day in Oz, right?
