After the sinking of the ship The Golden Mary, the survivors find themselves drifting in a pair of lifeboats. In order to keep spirits high, first mate John Steadiman implores his passengers to recount stories of their lives, in the hopes that these will cheer others and help them on their journey until safe passage is fulfilled.
"The Wreck of the Golden Mary (Being the Captain’s Account of the Loss of the Ship, and the Mate’s Account of the Great Deliverance of Her People in an Open Boat at Sea)" is a collection of six connected short stories and one poem written by six different authors. Together, these formed the main part of the Christmas 1856 issue of the magazine 'Household Words', which was edited by Dickens at this time.
Dickens began a tradition of Christmas publications with "A Christmas Carol" in 1843 and his Christmas stories soon became a national institution.
Read by Elliot Fitzpatrick.
