In this video Dr Faisal Anwar will discuss about Uses of Silicon oil in retinal detachment surgery and its complications.
Silicone oil is commonly utilized in retinal detachment surgery, particularly in complex or recurrent cases. It acts as a tamponade agent, providing internal support to keep the retina in place while it heals. Here are some key aspects of its use:
Purpose: Silicone oil is used to press the retina against the back of the eye, aiding in reattachment and stabilization.
Procedure: During vitrectomy, the vitreous gel is removed and replaced with silicone oil. This may be combined with laser photocoagulation or cryotherapy to seal retinal breaks.
Duration: Silicone oil can remain in the eye for several months to ensure adequate healing. Its removal is typically planned once the retina is stable.
