Painting, contrary to popular belief, is much more about the process than the materials. You can spend less money on cheaper paints, and more time on the finishing process, and get a great automotive paint job out of it.
The most important thing about automotive painting, is sanding the surfaces to be painted, to ensure they are uniform, and do not contain any high or low spots where more or less paint will accumulate.
The steps are as follows:
1: sand the exterior first with 220 grit sand paper, followed by 400, then 600 to ensure a proper, smooth finish.
2: apply a primer, IF necessary.
3: apply a light initial coat of topcoat paint.
4: sand first topcoat with 400, and then 600 grit sand paper.
5: apply second topcoat.
6: sand second topcoat with 600 grit sand paper.
7: apply third and final topcoat.
8: sand topcoat with 600 or higher grit sandpaper.
9: apply clear coat.
10: buff clear coat with buffing compound.
