In 479 BCE, Rome was once again embroiled in a series of wars with it's northern neighbor, Veii. Veii was the most powerful Etruscan city state of the time and represented the greatest chance for the Etruscans to fight the growing Roman power in Italy. But Rome was not going to go down so easily. A particular family, the gens Fabia, would prove that Rome was not so easily conquered. They would sacrifice most of their surviving male family members to ensure that Rome would triumph over Veii, at least for now. However, the war came down to the wire. With Rome even losing the upper hand on several occasions. In fact, Rome itself would even be threatened with Veii occupying the Janiculum for over a year. But what did the Fabia family actually do? Are the legends true? How did Rome defeat Veii? And was this the last war between Rome and the city state? Let's talk about it.
